I'm just putting the finishing touches on my two latest ukes. They are cigar box style baritone ukuleles. They are scaled down (83%) versions of my El Cubano Grande tenor guitar. Just scaling something up or down does not guarantee that the same results will occur. In this case I've gotten very good results by doing this. Here are a few pictures of the two instruments.

I'll keep one in my collection and one will be making it's way to the east coast in a little brown truck next week. It never ceases to amaze me how good these little cedar boxes sound.

Now onto my next project. A resonator tenor guitar.

Beautiful work, Leroy!

So, if these are 83% of your 23" scale tenor guitar, you're at a 19" scale and the boxes appear to be 12" x 8" for the baritone ukes, and 15" x 10" for the tenor guitar.

Did you consider using the larger box for the baritone uke? Or was there a gut level feeling that the proportions were wrong?

Thanks.

Scaling down keeps the proportions correct (in my opinion). The neck joins at almost exactly the 12th fret. Plenty of interior volume for a nice full sound.

Leroy, do these cigar box ukes sound as good as regular ukes? They sure look funky! Maybe I'll try one. Any suggestions on which boxes sound best?

You inspired me to put together a photo essay and explanation of this build. This baritone uke and my cigar box style tenor guitar are two of the best sounding instruments I've built. They have a mellow full bodied sound.

Building the box myself, I lost the cigar box gimmick, but gained a known quality sound chamber. It all depends what is important to the builder.

Click on this link to go to the photo essay. Also click on the last image and it will take you to a short video of me explaining the instrument and a few sound examples.
